How to Plant Peonies
Peony roots are available to purchase at box stores, nurseries and online catalogs. The key importance when planting these roots are:
-
Find a sunny location with 8 hours or direct light.
-
Prepare the soil in the planting location first, adding compost/shredded leaves, etc. into the soil to a depth of 12 inches.
-
You can add a couple tablespoons of sulfur in the planting bed, and mix in with the soil. DO NOT put sulfur directly in the bottom of the planting hole.
-
Water the mixed soil so it can resettle before planting.
-
Peonies needs to be planting shallow. It is very easy to plant them too deep, which leads to no blooms or flat-out failure.
-
Very lightly cover with mulch on the top with mulch, no more than an inch deep.
